Freshwater fish – Preparation and benefits to the body

Freshwater fish are known to be a good source of fatty acids. Examples of freshwater fish include:

  • Black basses
  • Catfish
  • Crappie
  • Sunfishes
  • Minnows
  • Carp
  • suckers

Freshwater fish have many advantages that make them a suitable source of protein. These benefits include:

  • They reduce risks of getting cancer

Consumption of omega 3 is very important because this reduces risks of getting cancer by 50 percent. Examples of cancer that fish prevents are: breast cancer, ovary cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer and oral cancer.

  • They prevent cardiovascular diseases

This is done by the fatty acids which reduce blood clots. They also improve vessel elasticity and lower blood pressure. They boost good cholesterol and lower blood fats.

  • They decrease risks of dementia.

This helps them lower the risk of Alzheimer diseases. It is helpful to elderly people.

  • Freshwater fish help in the management of diabetes

Fatty acids manage sugar blood levels preventing a person from getting diabetes.

  • It relieves inflammatory conditions

Fish assists in relieving conditions such as psoriasis or rheumatoid arthritis

  • Fish also improves brain and eye healthy

It is rich in omega 3 which improves the health of both the brain tissue and the retina.

  • Decreases the rates of depression

This is because fatty acids are known to manage hormonal functions lowering incidences of depressions

  • They decrease asthma risks

Fatty acids are known to improve blood circulation and the supply of oxygen in the respiratory system. Studies have shown that people who eat fish have less incidences of asthma compared to those who do not eat fish.

Storage of freshwater fish is a delicate matter because fish a highly perishable products.  Rotten fish is hazardous to human health because it causes food poisoning hence it is important to make sure that fish are properly stored. There are a number of ways one can store fish. They include:

  • Canning
  • Drying
  • Refrigerating
  • Salting
