Types of vegetables

Vegetables are a key part of human nutrition. They have an important place in ensuring that a person has a balanced. Vegetables vary in terms of their nutritional value. There are different types of vegetables such as:

  • Flower vegetables

These are vegetables that tend to have a lot of colour and flower properties for example purple cabbages, cauliflower and lettuce.

  • Leafy vegetables

This type of vegetables look leaves plus they have a lot of green matter. An example of leafy vegetables include; kales and spinach

  • Root vegetables

Vegetables found in the ground are known as root vegetables most of them are tubers. They include: ginger, potatoes and arrow roots

  • Squash vegetables

Such vegetables have a lot of water content and flesh. These vegetables are usually soft and tender. They include; tomatoes and butternut.

There may be different types of vegetables but they all have common characteristics that make them popular when it comes to nutrition. These characteristics include:

  • Vegetables have large vitamin contents

Most vegetables have a lot of vitamins they have a lot of nutrients that are beneficial to one’s health

  • Vegetables are low in energy

This is because they have few calories. They are a good way of maintain a low calorie diet although they are not a reliable source of energy.

  • They have a lot of fibre

This quality enables them to facilitate of efficient digestion. This keeps the alimentary system clean improving the metabolism of the human body.

  • They add a lot of flavour to meals

Vegetables are known to be very delicious. Therefore, they make meals more flavourful.

There are many ways one cook vegetables. These methods are determined by one’s preference or health needs. They include:

  • Grilling
  • Boiling
  • Frying
  • Sautéing
  • Baking
  • Making soups out of vegetables
  • Eating them while they are raw

Storing different types of vegetables requires a lot of skill to ensure that they are kept fresh because vegetables are highly perishable food products. There are a number of tips that can be used to store vegetables. They include;

  • Remove all the ties and bands
  • Do not store vegetables and fruits together
  • Refrigerate the vegetables for a minimum period of time
  • Can the vegetables in airtight jars and cans
  • Dry the vegetables to prevent growth of bacteria.
